PLUS Studies

  1. Bladder Function in School-Aged Girls and Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
The objective is to complete a comprehensive search of studies over the past 5 years that include school-aged girls and women across multiple electronic databases and conduct a meta-analysis on selected outcomes measures.

  2. Insight into the concept of a “healthy bladder”: Secondary data analyses in the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey
Existing data from the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey is used to accomplish two goals related to bladder health: 1) to inform the concept of a “healthy bladder” in women across the lifespan; and 2) to provide additional reference values for bladder function in asymptomatic, community dwelling women.

  3. Study of Habits Attitudes Realities and Experiences (SHARE)
This study explores adolescent and adult women’s experiences, perceptions, beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors related to bladder health across the life course using a socioecological perspective.

  4. Perceptions and Contextual Experiences of Bladder Health: A Content Analysis of LURN Interviews with Women
Existing qualitative interview data from The Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network (LURN) will be used to 1) explore how women experience and characterize bladder health and 2) identify the spatial-temporal contexts (times, places, activities/events) where bladder health is most salient and amenable to targeted efforts to develop strategies for prevention.

  5. The Relation between Common Workforce Groups and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Analyses in the BACH Survey
Existing data from the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey is used to compare lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) prevalence and incidence across workforce groups in community-dwelling women.

  6. Early-life predictors of child, adolescent and young adult LUTS in the ALSPAC cohort
Data from the Avon Longitudinal Survey of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) is used to evaluate a variety of risk and protective factors for LUTS in children. ALSPAC if one of the few sources of longitudinal data on events and risk factors in early life that includes measures of LUTS in adolescence and young adulthood.

  7. PLUS Where I Go Mobile Bladder Application
A mobile application is developed to study bladder health in community women and girls in order to enhance our understanding of the wide variance in bladder habits in varied environments over time and to identify the underlying individual risk and protective factors to inform broad scale public health education on best practices for lifelong bladder health.

  8. Social network analysis of the PLUS Consortium
This study evaluates PLUS Consortium member participation and collaboration network and how it changes over time.

  9. Clarification of Language, Evaluation And Refinement of questions (CLEAR)
Cognitive interviews in conjunction with an electronic survey are used to test candidate survey items for inclusion in a bladder health measure that can assess the full range of bladder health and be considered for further reliability and validity testing.  Additional cognitive interviews/surveys are used to test key risk and protective factor candidate survey items capable of assessing risk and protective factors for bladder health.

  10. Validation of Bladder Health Instrument for Evaluation in Women (VIEW)
This study assesses the reliability and validity of a new Bladder Health Instrument (BHI) for measurement of bladder health among women across the life-course.  In addition, it evaluates the effects of mode of administration of the BHI across paper and pencil versus electronic modes.

  11. RISE FOR HEALTH (RISE) is a study of women’s bladder health conducted by research teams from ten universities across the United States. Our group of medical and research professionals is funded by the National Institutes of Health to learn about bladder health and the overall health of women in the United States. We hope that what we learn now will help us prevent bladder problems in future generations of women and girls.
